There is always something more to be experienced on the other side of the horizon. There is more to see on the next turn of the trail. There are experiences to hold in just one more mile. There is a joy to be found in never experiencing satisfaction…
These are guiding concepts for my life and how I see the world and I know I am not alone. Within us, is a gnawing and unquenchable thirst that cannot be silenced until every drop has been tasted. This feeling isn’t something I want to rid myself of anytime soon. Roots may come, and a city will become my forever home, but I never want to depart from the feeling of exploration.
Next year, when I attempt to conquer the Pacific Crest Trail, it will not be marked as my final grand adventure. Instead, it will give birth to a new opportunity which will morph into something else that will morph into something else. These adventures are about pushing myself forward and testing myself against the expanding universe. All because I want to experience as much as I can while I can. Why? Because all of this will end one day.
One day, my ashes will be an object for the wind to scatter to the four points of the globe and my time will be through. On the eve of such an event, regrets will cross my mind. My only hope is that with each opportunity I lessen the volume to a more manageable pile. I may never know satisfaction. Kids and picket fences may never be me, but I promise you I will die having lived life. In the end, for me, this is all that I can ask for from myself and this world.
Be good to each other,
-Nathan
