Within the confines of a powerful story, lies the ability to change the direction of your life. For that reason, I will never understand people who proudly profess to be non-readers. They have no concept of the worlds within themselves they are missing. Things, important things, are going undiscovered within their mind and heart. Reading can be like meditation. It requires stillness and the ability to transport ourselves somewhere else. There isn't a person on this planet who couldn't use those moments of quiet reflection.
Beyond what we read, we each have our own story. While there aren't many truly unique human experiences left to be had, people often hold a feeling of being alone in this world. When we share our story, we invite others in, but we also let those who read and share know that they aren't alone. If that choice to share can save or impact someone else's life, then it is our duty to do so.
The impact may not be felt immediately. Have no doubt though, we each recall on a daily basis a lesson learned from an impactful story. These stories, no matter how far out there they are, influence and shape us. They offer wisdom, strength, perspective and a thousand other characteristics we couldn't experience through our living alone. When we face a trial or tribulation or joy, these stories we've encountered let us know the universe knows and an author can relate.
And when we face obstacles in life, our story provides context for others. People are always watching and judging. They take notes with their eyes. This practice isn't necessarily a bad thing. They are viewing their world through you. You are helping them, maybe without even knowing it. So, know this, the pain you may feel is probably guiding someone. You are acting as a teacher with a story to tell.
With all this said, don't concern yourself with those who don't read. Their story isn't worth reading. They are too inwardly focused. They can't see the world with empathetic eyes. They aren't full of characters beyond themselves. They aren't curious. Don't fall in love with someone who doesn't read.
Thanks for entering my world,
-Nathan
