For a year now, I've been able to call myself a graduate of Seattle University. Everytime I look at my email signature and see MNPL, I am filled with a sense of pride. When I enter my office, my bright red degree is this first thing to greet me. I am honored to meet fellow graduates, help usher in a new generation and even write a few recommendation letters. Seattle University was everything I needed it to be and beyond my wildest expectations.
$53,000 in student loan debt, (don't feel bad Seattle U, some of that debt belongs to the University of Central Oklahoma) I can't help but wonder, "What is next?" The last year has been one of the most frustrating in my life. In that time, I've applied for 52 different jobs and received 52 rejection emails. No phone interview. No face to face conversations. I've done everything the best Career Services counselor will tell you to do. I've sent out introduction letters. Asked for recommendations. Attended networking events. Had my resume and cover letter reviewed. Yet, here I am still waiting for my ship to come.
I know I am not alone in this sentiment. The job market is tough. I couldn't imagine what it feels like to only have a high school education. At times, it is hard not to feel like we were sold a false bill of goods. Learn these things, lead here, research there, network, network, network and your dreams will come true. College campuses make the next phase of life seem so attainable. They promise an education will unlock doors, produce white picket fences, find the perfect partner and summon your dream job. You know, the one that will fulfill your wildest aspirations. I am here to tell you recent graduates, It. Is. Not. True. Sort of.
Study after study reveals we are better off than those without degrees. On average, we will earn more and earn it faster. Doors will open. Doors to life, love and dreams. We are ready, because we were lucky enough to receive a quality education. So, stay patient. It is something I keep telling myself. Our opportunity will come. Our door will open, we just have to be ready.
Thanks for entering my world,
-Nathan
