Sauce: Cocktail of the Year (2020)

Cocktail: Gin Mule

Cocktail of the Year: I have been playing home bartender and writing about my experience for a few years now. I am always surprised by what connects with people and how they respond. In the era of COVID, I found readers were hungry for something they could do at home. I think they were searching for an experience mirroring something they would normally be doing. Some people baked. Others cooked. Others found new hobbies. And some people fell in love with the art of cocktails. Whatever your new thing is, I hope you are finding joy in it and it is bringing you a sense of normalcy. Friends, we are almost there. Until then, thanks for reading and sharing your cocktail journey with me.

Ingredients: 2 oz. Gin, Club Soda, 15 grams of Ginger Root, Ice Cubes, 0.5 oz. Lemon Juice, Lime Slice, 1 oz. Simple Syrup

Directions: Fill a highball glass with ice. Place two slices of ginger root into a shaker and muddle. Pour in lemon juice, simple syrup, and gin. Fill the shaker with ice cubes and shake. Fine strain into a highball glass. Top with club soda and stir gently. Garnish with a lime wheel and a slice of ginger root.

Bartender Reaction: I have been making Mules for a while now, but have always reached for a store-bought ginger beer when constructing my cocktail. This time around, I chose to muddle my own ginger and then add the liquid ingredients. While muddling ginger does take some forearm strength, there is no denying the spicy flavor delivered thanks to fresh ginger. After tasting the final product, there is no doubt in my mind that my days using ginger beer are numbered. Mixed with lime and simple syrup, this cocktail is sweet and spicy. It is a drink for all seasons and should be added to your regular rotation.

Be good to each other,

Nathan
