Cinephile No. 578 "Spa Night"

"Spa Night" suffers from an inability to tell two stories at the same time. It either needed to focus on telling the story of a gay youth coming to terms with his sexuality within the context of an immigrant Korean family or it needed to paint a picture of a family trying to make it in America. Instead, it tries to do both with a spa as the backdrop. Where it fails is its inability to bring the stories together. Now, some might say, "that's life!" "It's complicated and has layers." I wholeheartedly agree, my complaint is with the approach taken by the writers. The stories felt too far apart to ever come together. By the time the credits rolled, we are left to wonder if they ever will.

Be good to each other,
