At the center of every album is a musical thesis. Death Cab for Cutie’s “Kintsugi” is focused on beautifully broken things. Relationships end, places you’ve come to call home feel distant and life can feel out of context… these are the issues being tackled here. I don’t know anyone who cannot relate to the topics at hand. On the flipside of these events, something not often spoken of, is our ability to put life back together again. While this album doesn’t spend much time dealing with the end, the power to get through life’s challenges is there. It is present like the word you in the sentence, “go to the store.” We may not see it, but we know it is implied. Another thing implied here is a love and respect for the fans of Death Cab’s music. Some were not big fans of “Codes and Keys.” I wasn’t in that camp, but this album was also about repairing that relationship and putting it back together. I, for one, think they found the glue.
