The Five Things We Should Worry About

The five things we should worry about, instead of who loves whom.

There are bigger problems in the world than getting involved in an argument about whether or not it’s okay for a man to love a man, a man to love a woman, or a woman to love a woman. Don’t we all have more than enough of our own to handle without being involved in someone else’s decisions or life choices that have zero to do with us? Aren’t we all trying to make it through this life in the best way we can? To enjoy the sweet moments gifted to us? To worry about the true concerns of our own lives? I can’t shake the disappointment I feel for the people who don’t support the ability for all of us to love one another in the way that works for us individually. With this in mind, I started to think about the things that really should be worries for us.  I present to you the five worries more important than who should be allowed to love whom.

1.      The Planet – Perhaps instead of meddling in the affairs of our neighbors we should worry with whether or not we’re going to be able to survive after we’ve absolutely rendered this planet useless. And yes, I know that some people would read this and think that global warming isn’t “real”. Perhaps you’re right and the glaciers are just “going through a phase” but I’m pretty certain when ancient artifacts and human remains that have been buried for hundreds, if not thousands, of years are reappearing because of the ice melt, we have a major issue. Get it together, Earthlings. It’s just a matter of time before all of us, gay, straight, transgendered, asexual, are all going to be wiped out as a species.

2.      Sexual Trafficking – This scares the bejesus out of me. So much so, that I’ve lost sleep at night wondering how to protect my sisters, cousins or nieces from being kidnapped and lost into a world that is so absolutely terrifying and disgusting that it makes me want to speed up the “phase” that the glaciers are in. If we, as humans, are more concerned about the ability for two men to make a commitment to each other, than we are about our children getting stolen, raped, tortured and abused, than maybe we don’t deserve to be here.

3.      What’s in our food – In addition to poisoning our planet, we’re also willingly poisoning one another, and all in the name of the almighty dollar. If you are more concerned about who’s sitting at your daughter’s breakfast table, than what’s making its way onto her plate, I suggest you check out Food Inc., Fed Up and Vegucated. It’s pretty scary, and most of us (myself previously included) are mindless drones ingesting it all without a care in the world.

4.      Cancer – We all want to survive longer and have as many days as possible with the ones we love (that’s ironic, considering what spurred this topic), but we’re all fighting a battle. Our foe, thanks to (likely) the same causes of worry #1 and worry #3, is gargantuan.  We need to watch out for each other, we need to start making sure that what’s put into our bodies and in our atmosphere isn’t taking away our ability to love our loved ones for as long as possible, and we need to stop allowing the mentality of “it is what it is”.

5.      Pretty much, absolutely EVERYTHING – Yep, all of it. I think it’s more important to worry about animal welfare, the return of Clearly Canadian, time travel, biological warfare, why the Kardashians are popular, if big French fries come from big potatoes, when the next Tool album will come out, nuclear warfare, plant and animal extinction, and why television show finales like Sons of Anarchy and Dexter are SO terrible, than it is to worry about who someone loves. Let a person love anyone they want to, and hopefully they will experience the joy of that person loving them back. It’s the least we should want for one another.

That’s your piece of me.
